Visitor Information
No Smoking

It is illegal to smoke in any enclosed public areas. Colchester Zoo, therefore, strongly discourages you from smoking anywhere inside the zoo grounds. Smoking is not permitted around any animal enclosures, food outlets, picnic areas or any other buildings or enclosed areas including displays. From 2011 a ban on smoking will be put into place.

Re-entry

Please ask at the Ark Shop for a wrist band to enable you to re-enter the Zoo. Remember you must show an admission ticket to receive a wristband.

Locker Hire

Are all located at the zoo entrance and can be hired for a small charge. Please ask at Visitor's Reception directly to the left after the turnstiles.

First Aid

In an emergency, go to the nearest point of sale or someone wearing a Zoo uniform. You will be taken to the nearest First Aid Station.

Telephones

Are located at the Zoo exit next to Chimp World.

Meeting Point, Lost and Found

We suggest that you organise to meet at the Meeting Point located near the Zoo exit. Please enquire at Guest Services, near the Southern Fried Chicken outlet, for lost property and if you are not reunited with your party.

Facilities for Babies

Nappy changing facilities are provided in each toilet block. Feeding areas are also located at the toilets at Kalahari Capers, Small Mammals, Julie Ward picnic area, Edge of Africa, Kilimanjaro play area, World of Wings and the Kokopelli Area. Female only breast feeding areas are located at the Julie Ward picnic area and at Edge of Africa. For bottle or baby food warming please ask at Cafe UmPhafa, Kokopelli’s Pizza Bar or Southern Fried Chicken.

Facilities for the Disabled

Disabled parking areas are clearly marked on arrival. Please ensure that a Blue Badge is clearly displayed. Toilet facilities for the disabled are located in each toilet block and all catering and retail outlets are easily accessible. Because of the steep hills in the Zoo we recommend that anyone with a wheelchair follows the "Easier Route" which gives the best route possible around the Zoo avoiding the steepest hills. This is a yellow line to follow around the zoo’s pathways. For this reason, discounted rates are available for the disabled. For rates and more information on our facilities for the disabled, please click here.

Dogs

Please note that no dogs are allowed except for Registered Assistance dogs.

In order for you to enjoy your visit with no worries about your dog, we strongly suggest that you leave it at home. Dogs can suffer greatly in a very short time when left in a warm car or caravan, which may lead to brain damage and death. Leaving an open window is not sufficient enough to help it.

Information

If there is anything else that you need, please ask at Visitor Reception or Guest Services.

Visiting at busy times

On busy days we recommend you visit follow the Easier Route in reverse to should avoid the crowds. To save time and avoid queuing we suggest you use the Zoo's main food outlets outside peak hours and use the shops during the day, rather than at the end of your visit

Visiting on quieter days

Whilst some catering outlets will remain open, some will be closed on quieter days. All displays will run as normal even if one one person wishes to attend. You are always recommended, however, to arrive on time.

Animal welfare

Please do not feed the animals unless directed as most need a carefully balanced diet. The natural style of the enclosures may mean that you need to look carefully to see the animals. Please do not bang on the glass or shout. You can always return later in the day for another look. If an enclosure were to be empty there would be a notice informing you of this.
