Leading Wildlife Artist to open Colchester Zoo’s new Heart of the Amazon
7.7.02
The leading wildlife artist and conservationist, David Shepherd is to open Colchester Zoo’s new Heart of the Amazon enclosure on Wednesday 7th August at 2pm.
The enclosure houses Colchester Zoo’s large breeding group of Squirrel monkeys and is situated in the Aquatic Zone of the Zoo. The Squirrel monkey group is already breeding well and several new babies can be seen with their mums. It is yet another species that is vulnerable in the wild due to habitat loss and slash and burn agriculture in the rainforests. They are also, sadly caught in the wild for the pet trade.
The enclosure also houses Agoutis, Green iguanas, Pacu and Arawana fish and the new design allows visitors to walk through the centre of the enclosure to view the Squirrel Monkeys on both sides. An exciting network of bamboo poles strung throughout the enclosure gives the Squirrel Monkeys a play area any child would envy.
David Shepherd is known internationally as an artist and ambassador for wildlife and with the help of supporters across the world the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation has already given more than £3 million in grants towards conservation projects.
